Meal planning is one of my favorite things to do each week. I know many people hate it, but I enjoy it so much! I have gotten many questions about how I meal plan, so I thought I would share it today. I do the same thing each week and it is a very helpful routine for me as I prepare for the week.
Gather all the necessary supplies.
First, I gather my laptop, a notepad, my beautiful Rifle Paper Company Menu plan, my planner, and any cookbooks I plan on using that week. I usually grab a cup of coffee or tea, and turn on Food network (I clearly do this while the kids are napping)
Go through the fridge, freezer and pantry.
Look through and see what you have that needs to be used, or that you have left over from the previous week. I grab my notepad and write down if I have any meat in the freezer, veggies or fruit that need to be used, or an abundance of rice or pasta that I want to use.
Look through Pinterest or cook books.
I have a million cookbooks, and I love to use them, but my favorite place to go is Pinterest. I have a food board, and it is super easy to search for a specific dish there.
Start your list.
I jot down each day of the week on a sheet of paper:
I use a pencil and jot down meal ideas for each night based on what is on the calendar, how much time I will have to make dinner, what nights we will be eating out, etc. Breakfast and lunch are usually easier because we do the same stuff for breakfast, and leftovers for lunch.
Make your grocery list.
I like to make my grocery list while I am looking up recipes. I make my grocery lists by category. I make a column for Produce, Meat, Dairy, Frozen, and Other. That way I can make sure I don’t forget anything because everything has it’s own category.
Write it on your Menu Plan.
At this point, I get out my pretty Menu plan that hangs on the fridge, and write out what we are having for each meal.
Again, there is no science to this at all, just how I do it to keep myself organized and to make sure we don’t eat chick-fil-a every meal.
I would love to hear how you meal plan! I am always looking for ways to become more efficient or add something to my routine!
Until next time...
